Last Things is a homage to the elegance of geology—to chondrites, crystals, and minerals that existed long before organisms, single-celled life, or animals—let alone humans. And they will still exist when humans are long gone. Extinction and emergence go hand in hand, and the distant past might hardly be distinguishable from the most distant future. In this sense, the homage is also an encouraging speech at an open grave, and perhaps a call for humility. It is also a tribute to life, “which originated through the interaction of minerals with water and carbon dioxide,” as the voice of the scientist in the voice-over explains.
